There are all kinds of considerations here...like financial need etc...hard to see around that retirement corner and it probably is more scary than the medical risks...hard choices in a hard game...the average NFL death is age 53 that is no misprint Fifty Three....Hard life....
Steelers! Don't allow him to play, period! Don't risk a fine young man's life for a game.
On the Dallas situation with Roy Williams, I am glad that you have himbut I'm sorry that we Detroit fans spent so much to find out he was a laggard. I am not claiming to be the athlete that he his but when is he going to fulfill his "potential"?
I Love the Steelers & I Love the Cowboys forget it I love football, But above all of that I love this young man & I don't even know him. This guy has not had a good time in Denver. I'm a sickel cell carrier so is my brother. :( His daughter went to the mountains on a 6 grd. feild trip they ? themselves about letting her go but she cried & they gave in :( i'm crying sry..... So she went, Not long after 911calls to home from the mountains was received. She was rushed home & admitted to the hospital & later past. Worst day of my life seeing my niece on that hospital bed a sleep.......
what is he ignorate about sickle cell it starves his system of oxygen! in a lower o2 enviroment it could kill him. as it almost did. he would have to be stupid to play or have a law suit in mind. pittsburg needs to bench him and leave him at home for his safety and the teams security. his family will have a good law suit if the team doctor allows this it is their responsibility to not send him.
I live in New Mexico, at an altitude of over 7,000 ft. i'm a competitive boxer. But when I bring in an opponent from California or some other area near sea level, I always tell them to take at least 48 hours to acclimatize to the elevation. For most people a couple of days at this altitude is all they need to be able to perform athletically. Certainly there are sickle cell stricken people living in Denver, and they can do so because they're accimatized. Send him to Denver 2 days ahead of the rest of the team, have him do a couple of light work outs during that 48 hours. This could be the solution, acclimitazation.
Here's what a doctor wrote about sickle cell trait:
"such problems include increased urinary tract infection in women, gross hematuria, complications of hyphema, splenic infarction with altitude hypoxia or exercise, and life-threatening complications of exercise, exertional heat illness (exertional rhabdomyolysis, heat stroke, or renal failure) or idiopathic sudden death (1-4).
Methinks if I was his coach, I'd say look, I love you, man. And because I love you, you won't be playing in this game. Leave your pads on the bus.
John K...you're such a compassionate guy. Actually, SOMETIMES because you love somebody, you tell them no, you can't, regardless of what they want. I suppose is this was your CHILD you'd say, well, I know that you nearly died last time, but if you want to try it again, you have my blessing? I doubt it...though you'll probably say "of course I would. Whatever makes him/her happy."
I would say let him play if he wants to but make him do a complete warm-up first and evaluate him after that. If he isn't doing well, don't let him play. If that isn't enough, just limit his play time.
You always hear about fund raising or donations to find cures for cancer, ms, diabetes, asthma, but nothing for sickle cell. Why is that. Sickle cell is an excruciating painful disease that can appear at anytime. One minute you feel fine, the next minute awful pain that will not go away. I know how it is. When I have a crisis, it takes me weeks to get back to normal with getting your strength back and getting the meds out of your system. Then you have to deal with the medical bills. At least he has an organization that will give him top notch treatment.
I wouldn't play him. I would take the decision out of his hands. As much as he wants to play he should want to live.
Dont play Ryan! Please. Not worth it sir. The fact you are even debating it shows exactly how strong you are. Fight another day my man.
DONT LET HIM PLAY! I may not be a big steelers fan but still would think they'd risk a players life!
Go Steelers!!...Love'em,but it's all about what really matters...his FAMILY...he said when that incident occurred, the only thing on his mind was his FAMILY. Even though his spleen and gall badder were take out, there are still other factors. No, its not gonna hurt to miss a game; sit on the sidelines this one time; life is a precious thing and that little girl having her father is also. He's a great player and noone will think any less of him. God bless him and his family.
The altitude in Denver affects ALL people that go there, especially the older and the physically impaired. This young man HAS a blood cell problem and that means an Oxygen availability problem. Even without a spleen, he will have other organs affected by hypo-oxygenation. My suggestion is for this young man to NOT play in Denver. He can visit just not perform strenuos, short burst physical activity like pro football.
I'm not a fan of the Steelers (Carolina fan) but if he does play BEST WISHES TO HIM! and ya gotta love the attitude and heart he puts into his team!
The Steelers should deactivate Ryan Clark for Monday's game in Denver. After all, it's only a game and life and family are so much more important. Furthermore, considering how poor the Steelers have played on the road this year, how well denver is playing along with their hostile crowd, I think the Steelers going to get creamed with or without Ryan Clark. So it makes so much sense to rest him.
As long as Hines Ward is OK --I'm OK--His career ending injury is planned for November 29th in Baltimore-- And I want to make sure he is in attendance--RIP Hines
To "BUCKOFAMA",,,,,,,You poor diluted, sick, piece of feces. How dare you?! Little children, by the thousands, and adults suffer from this horrible disease, and you go and say something as EVIL as this. NO use trying to argue, or say anything to you. Just wanted you to know there is someone out here that was watching and reading. You should be pitied, but it's so hard to pity a "go to Hell" racist............
